Our Flock History

Jock Litchfield at “Glenfinnan” Nimmitabel in the early 80’s

The flock was established in 1978 on the Monaro by Jock Litchfield who, in conjunction with the University of NSW, started breeding Suffolks with Dorsets and line breeding the '“whitest” progeny. The end goal was to breed well muscled, fast growing Suffolk lambs that wouldn't be penalised in the market due to their black fibres.

Jock participated in cooperative breeding ventures and would receive breeding animals from the university nucleus flock run at the Hay research station. In 1984 the nucleus flock was sold to PLG (Prime Lamb Genetics) a group of 35 ram breeders, Jock being one of them, who then ran the flock at Charle Sturt University at Wagga Wagga. The group were able to use this nucleus to access the very best and most profitable sheep to progress their own studs.

Anna Hayes at “Glenfinnan” Nimmitabel

In 1996 Jock sold the Glenfinnan PLG stud to his daughter Anna and her husband John Hayes. The Hayes then relocated the stud to their property Bullaworrie at Young and continued the legacy of sourcing the very best White Suffolk genetics from across Australia and producing commercially relevant rams with early maturity, growth rate and confirmation.

In early 2024 Glenfinnan commenced yet another new chapter, being purchased by the Bogo Genetics business and being relocated to their property ‘Springfield’ at Cootamundra to be run alongside their existing merino stud. The team at Bogo are excited to be able to continue to build and enhance the great foundation created by the Hayes/Litchfield families.
